Our Story

Comstock Bonanza Press was founded by David Allan Comstock in Grass Valley, California — the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills and one of the richest gold-mining regions in American history. What began as a passion project to document the true stories of Nevada County grew into a respected independent publishing house with a catalog spanning more than four decades.

David Allan Comstock launched the press with his landmark series The Nevada County Chronicles, a meticulously researched multi-volume history tracing the lives of settlers, miners, merchants, and families who shaped the region from the Gold Rush era through the turn of the twentieth century. His first title, Gold Diggers and Camp Followers, 1845–1851, appeared in 1982 and set the standard for the press: deeply sourced, richly illustrated, and written with the narrative drive of a novel.

Over the years, Comstock Bonanza Press expanded its list to include natural history, biography, poetry, and local memoir — always with an eye toward voices and places that mainstream publishing overlooked. The press has been home to authors such as Gage McKinney, Toni Fauver, Cynthia Anderson, Jack Clark, and Esther J. Comstock, among many others.

Our Mission

We publish books that matter to the communities they document — works of history, natural history, biography, and local literature rooted in the Sierra Nevada foothills and the broader California experience. Our goal is to keep these stories in print and accessible for generations to come.
